One of the first deflections you’re likely to encounter from someone defensive of anthroposophy and/or Steiner education will be something along the lines of “but he wrote that 90 years ago!!”
Fact is, The entirety of the Steiner/Waldorf educational system and model is based on writings from “90 years ago”. With the exception of classic literature, required reading materials for teacher training are based entirely on Steiner’s oevre, and followups from his followers.
But detractors and others with questions don’t need Steiner-critical sites such as BlackCrayons to read for themselves what the man thinks of so many peoples, and thus so many of the young people Steiner ed. purports to endow with a superior education.
The Rudolf Steiner Archive is maintained by the Rudolf Steiner Estate. Translations are done by Rudolf Steiner’s own followers. For English-speakers, it’s a great educational tool for horse’s-mouth source material, whether or not one ascribes to what Steiner said about any given topic.
It also becomes crystal clear just what he felt the “anthro” — the human being — is.
One of my favorite things about the Rudolf Steiner Archive is its disclaimer which reads, in part:
Rudolf Steiner has given the following prefatory words for all of his writings:
No person is qualified to form a judgment on the contents of this work, who has not acquired — through the School of Spiritual Science itself or in an equivalent manner recognized by the School of Spiritual Science — the requisite preliminary knowledge. Other opinions will be disregarded: the authors decline to take them as a basis for discussion.
When reading Steiner’s works, be prepared to think. It is a first step to understanding. It is a first step to opening oneself to myriad possibilities. It is the first step in thinking, feeling, and willing.
BlackCrayons says, if the Steiner Estate truly holds outsider critiques in such deep contempt, their own first step should entail learning how people use the internet, and not putting his writings up for scrutiny in the first place.
